Marriott International has unveiled its long-awaited, luxury boutique brand and will open two properties in the final quarter of this year. Called Edition, the concept is led by style icon Ian Schrager, who is widely credited with popularising the boutique concept.

Edition will debut its first property in Hawaiis Waikiki Beach in October, and will be followed by a second in Istanbul, Turkey in December.

The brand will position itself as a price leader with its hotels among the most expensive in their respective locations. Marriott hopes this approach minimise its exposure to economic downturns.

Over two thousand hotels are presently in development across the globe, with the Asian/Pacific region leading the charge, according to the latest STR Global Construction Pipeline Report.

There are some 948 projects, comprising 239,918 rooms, in the planning or construction stages across the Asia/Pacific region, according to the data. Shanghai, China, was among the key markets in the region, ending January this year with 13,762 rooms in the pipeline.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE: HOT) today announces the opening of its first ElementSM hotel in New Jersey and the seventh Element hotel globally, Element Ewing-Hopewell in Ewing, New Jersey, just 10 minutes outside Princeton.
The hotel is owned through a joint venture between American Properties Realty, Inc. and Hersha Hospitality Management, L.P., which is also the manager of the hotel.

Travelodge has announced plans to open 26 new hotels in the UK this year in a programme worth £115m. The expansion will create over 2,000 rooms as well as 500 new jobs within the budget hotel chain.

The expansion will take Travelodges UK portfolio to more than 400 properties and 30,000 rooms, and will include new hotels in London, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Colwyn Bay and Morecambe.
