Dubais aircraft leasing company is to postpone a $27 billion order for new aircraft as the emirate continues to struggle with its debt mountain.

Dubai Aerospace Enterprise (DAE), which is owned by a number of Dubai state-owned investment vehicles, is negotiating with Boeing and Airbus to postpone delivery of more than 200 aircraft for its leasing division, according to The Times.

Airlines are likely to add more than $50 to the price of transatlantic tickets in a bid to recoup losses from the volcanic ash crisis.

According to the Centre for Economics and Business Research, fares could rise by up to 5.2 per cent. This would add £31 to an economy flight to New York on British Airways, taking it to £545, and £12 to the cost of a flight to Italy, taking it up to £239.

Virgin Blue, Australia's second largest airline, is to embark on a massive spending spree with the purchase of 105 Boeing 737 aircraft. The order represents the largest for Boeing in the past 18 months, as well as the Virgin Blues most significant fleet upgrade in its 10-year history.

Passenger planes, trains, and automobiles were responsible for nearly four billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions in 2005--about 14 percent of the carbon dioxide emitted globally that year. If we continue to rely almost exclusively on petroleum to power these vehicles, they will be responsible for 11 billion to 18 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions in 2050.
