Merlin Entertainment, the operator of Madame Tussauds and the London Eye, has bought a 145-acre site in Florida for a Legoland resort as it gears up for a £2bn stock market floatation.

The Blackstone-owned theme park operator is paying $22m for Cypress Garden, an existing theme park about 30 minutes from Orlando. It is expected to pump in a further $100m converting it into a Legoland that will go head-to-head with Disneys theme parks.
