Infant ear piercing in Latino cultures and the United States

Although piercing a newborn's tiny ears is controversial in the United States, in Spain and Latin America it's customary to do so moments or days after a baby girl is born. In these cultures, it's believed that it's more painful for the child if you wait until she's older.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says there's little risk at any age if the piercing is performed carefully and cared for conscientiously. But the AAP does recommend waiting until a child is old enough to take care of the piercing herself.

Your babys brain has a lot of growing to do: she has to work out which shapes are humans, which sounds are dinner and which feelings should be announced really loudly. You can help her by providing the best possible conditions for emotional and physical growth.

Generally speaking, it's all right to allow your pet near your new baby, as long as the pet is well behaved and you are there to supervise.

It's common for a pet, who has until recently been the focus of the family's attention, to become jealous of a new baby. You should allow your pet to become accustomed to this new member of your household while in your presence. Continue to give your pet plenty of attention, both when your baby is present and when you have time alone with your pet. This will keep the jealous behavior to a minimum.
