Since digital cameras were first developed in the late 1980s, sensor resolution has increased continuously every year, and almost every new camera or update of an existing model has featured a more powerful sensor.
However there's a point at which simply adding more megapixels ceases to have any real benefit, and in fact can have a negative effect.
Cramming more photocells onto a tiny compact camera sensor means those photocells have to be smaller, and are therefore less efficient at capturing light, especially at low light levels, leading to reduced dynamic range and more noise at higher ISO settings.

Of the consumer-oriented image editing programs, probably the best known is Adobe Photoshop Elements 8. It's a lot cheaper than the full version of Photoshop and much easier to use, but the latest version is still around £90. It's packed with useful features, including sophisticated face recognition and image sorting by content, as well as advanced tools like context-sensitive re-sizing, but £90 is a lot of money for most people.

Just when we thought 12 Megapixels to be a standard for a compact camera, and camera manufacturers had stopped tumbling over each other in order to introduce the highest possible amount of pixels, Aptina comes to spoil the fun. Aptina is offering a new MT9F001 image sensor to the manufacturers, featuring no less than 14 Megapixels. Here we go again Naturally, a sensor should achieve an optimal performance, and yes indeed; the sensor is able to capture full video (1080/60 fps). And just where will we see this Aptina 14 Megapixel sensor? According to the information we received, Sanyo seems to seems to have taken a fancy to it / seems to be rather taken by it.

The Kodak KAF-18500 Image Sensor was developed specifically for the newly announced Leica M9, the latest member in Leicas legendary M-series of cameras.
Enabling a new generation of features and capabilities for this Rangefinder camera, the Kodak sensor provides full-frame image capture, increased resolution, and improved image quality compared to the image sensor used in the previous generation Leica M8 camera.
The Leica M9 is now the fourth Leica camera to utilize Kodak CCD Image Sensors, building on Kodaks earlier support of the Leica Digital Module-R, the Leica M8 (Leicas first digital Rangefinder camera), and the new Leica S2 camera.
