ScienceDaily (Aug. 6, 2010) HIV-AIDS. SARS. Ebola. Bird Flu. Swine Flu. Rabies.
These are emerging infectious diseases where the viruses have jumped from one animal species into another and now infect humans.
This is a phenomenon known as cross-species transmission (CST) and scientists are working to determine what drives it.

ScienceDaily (July 1, 2010) The discovery in Gabon of more than 250 fossils in an excellent state of conservation has provided proof, for the first time, of the existence of multicellular organisms 2.1 billion years ago.
This finding represents a major breakthrough: until now, the first complex life forms (made up of several cells) dated from around 600 million years ago.

ScienceDaily (Dec. 13, 2009) In ancient times, people with exceptional vision discovered that one of the brightest stars in the Big Dipper was, in fact, two stars so close together that most people cannot distinguish them. The two stars, Alcor and Mizar, were the first binary stars -- a pair of stars that orbit each other -- ever known.

Modern telescopes have since found that Mizar is itself a pair of binaries, revealing what was once thought of as a single star to be four stars orbiting each other. Alcor has been sometimes considered a fifth member of the system, orbiting far away from the Mizar quadruplet.

The results have just been published in Nano Letters, a journal of the American Chemical Society.

Archaeologists have found the remains of what could be Britain's oldest surviving human brain.

The team, excavating a York University site, discovered a skull containing a yellow substance which scans showed to be shrunken, but brain-shaped.
