ScienceDaily (Sep. 10, 2011) The blistering heat experienced by the United States during August, as well as the June through August months, marks the second warmest summer on record, according to scientists at NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) in Asheville, N.C.
The persistent heat, combined with below-average precipitation across the southern U.S. during August and the three summer months, continued a record-breaking drought across the region.

ScienceDaily (July 26, 2010) The memory of last winter's blizzards may be fading in this summer's searing heat, but scientists studying them have detected a perfect storm of converging weather patterns that had little relation to climate change.
The extraordinarily cold, snowy weather that hit parts of the U.S. East Coast and Europe was the result of a collision of two periodic weather patterns in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, a new study in the journal Geophysical Research Letters finds.

Federal regulators lifted a cloud of uncertainty when they announced it was lawful to hack or jailbreak an iPhone, declaring Monday there was no basis for copyright law to assist Apple in protecting its restrictive business model.

Jailbreaking is hacking the phones OS to allow consumers to run any app on the phone they choose, including applications not authorized by Apple.

WASHINGTON
(Reuters) - Violent crime in the United States, including murder and robbery, dropped 4.4 percent in the first half of 2009 and property crime like car thefts also dropped, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said on Monday.

The latest statistics suggest U.S. violent crime
could drop for a third full year in a row, a steady decline despite the harsh economic recession that some policymakers and police groups had feared would lead to an upward spike.

The FBI report did not offer an explanation for the declining crime rates.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Karen Cordova, a 17-year-old high school student and part-time supermarket cashier, admits she sometimes texts friends while driving home from work late at night, lonely and bored.

The Arizona teenager knows it's illegal in Phoenix and dangerous. She once almost drifted into oncoming traffic while looking at her phone.

But would a nationwide ban stop Cordova and her friends from texting in their cars? No way, she said.

"Nobody is going to listen," Cordova said.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. consumers stepped up their spending in November and grew more optimistic this month, unexpectedly strong data showed on Friday, raising hopes a self-sustaining economic recovery was starting to unfold.

A slew of data this week has suggested the recovery is gaining momentum, pulling further away from the devastating recession that pushed unemployment to quarter-century highs and raising hopes the economy can return to normal growth without massive government support.
