You have an allergy when your body overreacts to things that don't cause problems for most people.
These things are called allergens. Your body's overreaction to the allergens is what causes symptoms (see the box below for a list of symptoms). For example, sometimes the term "hay fever" is used to describe your body's allergic reaction to seasonal allergens in the air, such as grass or pollen.
Keeping a record of your allergy symptoms over a period of time can help you and your doctor identify which allergens cause you to overreact.

Asthma is the leading cause of chronic illness in children. It affects as many as 10%-12% of children in the U.S. and, for unknown reasons, is steadily increasing. It can begin at any age, but most children have their first symptoms by age 5.

So if you're around somebody who has the flu, and the next day you feel pretty good, you're not out of the woods yet. You can actually develop symptoms up to four to five days after being exposed to somebody who has the flu.
