Feeling the need to get a little more intimate with your computers? Dell understands your urge...
The PC giant has announced the desktop 'Inspiron One 19' and 'Studio 17' laptop each with integrated multi-touch and recognition of up to four fingers. Consequently owners will be able to navigate, draw onscreen, edit photos, swipe through playlists and much more all while your mouse/trackpad sits by feeling unloved.
After last weeks Asus UL50Vg, theres now another option if you're after a relatively thin and light laptop with a large screen and, potentially, excellent battery life. Indeed, Samsungs 15.6in X520 has more or less the same specifications as the Asus, including Intel's Consumer Ultra Low Voltage (CULV) processor.
The main differences are that it doesnt sport hybrid graphics or an overclocked CPU, and comes with Windows 7 Home Premium instead of Professional. Since it has a similar price point of around £600 and is also up against the Acer Aspire Timeline 5810T, now available for under £500, lets see how it compares.
While not a bad machine by any stretch, we weren't overly impressed with the last Packard Bell (PB) machine we looked at, the Easynote TJ65-AU-010UK. Let's find out if the Acer subsidiary can convince us this time around with its higher-specced EasyNote TJ65-AU-031UK.
Physically this laptop is completely identical, as you would expect considering it's part of the same TJ65 series. That means you get the signature honey-comb pattern piano-black lid, which unfortunately loves fingerprints and dust just as much as most glossy laptops.
SanDisk Corporation announced that the 64-gigabyte (GB) SanDisk pSSD Gen2 solid state drive was selected by Sony as the SSD of choice for its new VAIO X ultra-thin laptop. SSD for laptop (Solid State Drive) use no moving parts, enabling improved durability that helps prevent data loss resulting from drive failure. Computers with SSD run quieter and cooler, and use less power than conventional hard disk drives (HDD). The SanDisk pSSD drives small size complements ultra-thin laptops with small form factor requirements. SanDisk pSSD Generation 2 drives support Windows XP, Linux, and Windows 7, the operating system of choice for the Sony VAIO X laptop.
Plenty of manufacturers offer their laptops in a range of colours, but Sony has been at it for longer than most. One can trace this all the way back to the C Series in February 2007, which was replaced by the CR Series in August that year and then the CS Series last year. Unfortunately, while the outgoing CR was rather smart, the CS was quite a significant step backward, so we weren't surprised to see it swiftly replaced by the CW with the advent of Windows 7.
Tis the season to.... buy laptops? Oh, you may not think portable computing is at the top of you shopping list, but a lot has transpired in a year -- just ask the ghosts of holidays past. These days, you have a wide variety of affordable netbooks that do a whole lot more. Super-slim machines that can do everything from serve as bargain-basement Tablet PC's to cheap multimedia machines. All-purpose notebooks have beefed up on power while prices continue to drop. And then there's been some seriously ambitious new ultraportable designs that don't come cheap.
ScienceDaily (Nov. 19, 2009) In everything from computer processor chips to car engines to electric powerplants, the need to get rid of excess heat creates a major source of inefficiency. But new research points the way to a technology that might make it possible to harvest much of that wasted heat and turn it into usable electricity.
That kind of waste-energy harvesting might, for example, lead to cellphones with double the talk time, laptop computers that can operate twice as long before needing to be plugged in, or power plants that put out more electricity for a given amount of fuel, says Peter Hagelstein, co-author of a paper on the new concept appearing in November in the Journal of Applied Physics.
Overall, the E6400 XFR is a deliberately different proposition to competing rugged laptops. It's not best suited to situations where you really need to keep the weight down and it doesn't have the battery life or mission critical ruggedness for the most demanding environments, but it is very powerful, making it a useful alternative for anyone that doesn't want to sacrifice on performance.
A laptop that recharges wirelessly, a CPU that leaves the competition in the dust, and a top pick that's changing the face of computing--these are just three of the items in our PC World Top 100 list of the best products of the year.
PC World looked at many outstanding hardware, software, sites, and services this year, evaluating each one on its design, functionality, performance, and impact. Here is the cream of the crop, the 100 best of 2009. (Note that we chose not to rate products specifically on their price or value, focusing instead on their overall quality.)
