(Reuters) - Jailed Chinese pro-democracy activist Liu Xiaobo won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for decades of non-violent struggle for human rights, infuriating China, which called the award "an obscenity."

The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised Liu for his "long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China" and reiterated its belief in a "close connection between human rights and peace."

Liu is serving an 11-year jail term for helping to draw up a manifesto calling for free speech and multi-party elections.

Yang and partner Thomas Lennon won the Oscar in 2007 for "The Blood of Yingzhou District," which tells the story of traditional Chinese family obligations colliding with the fear of AIDS in impoverished Anhui province, and the fate of those left behind.

There are more Chinese and Indians than anyone else on earth, but they know astonishingly little of each other. Though diasporas from both nations have swept the world, it wasn't until the past 20 years that Indians and Chinese began visiting each other in significant numbers. Among those crossing the Himalayas was New Delhi native Pallavi Aiyar, who became the Beijing correspondent of the Hindu in 2002.
