LOS ANGELES, Dec. 22, 2009 (Reuters) "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell has decided to quit the top-rated TV talent show when his contract ends in 2010, according to a report in British tabloid The Sun, which would deal a blow to the Fox network.

Cowell, 50, has been with the TV juggernaut since the start of "American Idol" in 2002 but his contract expires after the end of Season 9, which starts in January and ends in May 2010, and in the past he has hinted at being bored with his role.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "American Idol", already America's most watched television series, was also the most time-shifted prime-time TV program in the United States in 2008, ratings tracker The Nielsen Company said on Tuesday.

An extra four million viewers watched the Fox network's "American Idol" in the seven days following the initial episodes, which aired two nights each week. The numbers belie the notion that live competition and topical programs are what advertisers call "digital video recorder (DVR) proof".

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "American Idol" will focus less on early auditions and give more time to performers who make it to Hollywood when the top-rated U.S. television talent show returns to the air in January, producers said on Monday.

The 2009 season also sees the addition of a fourth judge and the return of the popular "wild card" round for contestants vying to get a coveted place among the final twelve singers who compete against each other on the program.
