Whether grown in the rockery, shade garden, front of the border or as a ground-cover, this small versatile plant is indeed worthy of any garden. Physicists Kill Cancer With 'Nanobubbles' http://www.gifts45.com/modules/Xigg/index.php/node/2472 ScienceDaily (Feb. 5, 2010) Using lasers and nanoparticles, scientists at Rice University have discovered a new technique for singling out individual diseased cells and destroying them with tiny explosions. The scientists used lasers to make "nanobubbles" by zapping gold nanoparticles inside cells. In tests on cancer cells, they found they could tune the lasers to create either small, bright bubbles that were visible but harmless or large bubbles that burst the cells. Computers That Use Light Instead of Electricity? First Germanium Laser Created http://www.gifts45.com/modules/Xigg/index.php/node/2471 ScienceDaily (Feb. 5, 2010) MIT researchers have demonstrated the first laser built from germanium that can produce wavelengths of light useful for optical communication. It's also the first germanium laser to operate at room temperature. Unlike the materials typically used in lasers, germanium is easy to incorporate into existing processes for manufacturing silicon chips. So the result could prove an important step toward computers that move data -- and maybe even perform calculations -- using light instead of electricity. But more fundamentally, the researchers have shown that, contrary to prior belief, a class of materials called indirect-band-gap semiconductors can yield practical lasers. Gifted 2010-02-06T15:22 Science and Society 'Zen' Bats Hit Their Target by Not Aiming at It http://www.gifts45.com/modules/Xigg/index.php/node/2470 ScienceDaily (Feb. 5, 2010) New research conducted at the University of Maryland's bat lab shows Egyptian fruit bats find a target by NOT aiming their guiding sonar directly at it. Instead, they alternately point the sound beam to either side of the target. The new findings by researchers from Maryland and the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel suggest that this strategy optimizes the bats' ability to pinpoint the location of a target, but also makes it harder for them to detect a target in the first place. Where Did Today's Spiral Galaxies Come From? http://www.gifts45.com/modules/Xigg/index.php/node/2469 ScienceDaily (Feb. 6, 2010) Galaxy morphology, or the study of the shapes and formation of galaxies, is a critical and much-debated topic in astronomy. An important tool for this is the Hubble sequence or Hubble tuning-fork diagram [1], a classification scheme invented in 1926 by the same Edwin Hubble in whose honour the space telescope is named.A team of European astronomers led by François Hammer of the Observatoire de Paris has, for the first time, completed a demographic census of galaxy types at two different points in the Universe's history -- in effect, creating two Hubble sequences -- that help explain how galaxies form. In this survey, researchers sampled 116 local galaxies and 148 distant galaxies.

Nikon D3s digital SLR camera test http://www.gifts45.com/modules/Xigg/index.php/node/2465 For a long time, Nikon users had been eyeing Canon with a slight degree of envy. Canons top models suffer less from noise. As a result, a group of photographers actually made the switch to Canon. That is; until Nikon introduced the D3. Thanks to this camera, Nikon regained the position that had been theirs for so long: at the top of the list, and first choice for most photo journalists. The D3 performs very well at high ISOs, is fast and has a great autofocus. There is not much to comment about the Nikon D3, however, Nikon has yet again updated the model to the Nikon D3s.
